Abstract of thesis: This report analyses the costs of travel time variability for air travelers. The case of air travelers is interesting since it is likely that the costs of variable travel times are high due to the fact that the cost of missing a flight are high. First, willingness to pay (WTP) for a reduction in schedule delay early, schedule delay late, access travel time and the probability to miss a flight are estimated using a stated choice experiment (SCE). The WTPs found are high which is mainly the result of a low cost sensitivity of the respondents. Second, models are developed to calculate the costs of variable travel times for air travelers going by car or public transport, taking into account travel time costs, scheduling costs and the costs of missing a flight. In the models anticipating behavior is accounted for. Finally, the results are applied in an airport choice model to see what the effects of increasing travel time reliability are on the market shares of airports in and around the catchment area of Schiphol airport.
