| Abstract of thesis: |
In recent years, low-cost carriers have been by far the most profitable carriers. This raises the question whether conventional airlines can successfully compete with low-cost airlines. The increasing importance of high-speed rail, and the announced deregulation of the transatlantic aviation market pose new threats to conventional airlines. But high-speed rail also offers opportunities, because high-speed rail can “feed” the intercontinental network of conventional airlines. In this research program we develop an empirically calibrated network competition model with heterogeneous supply and demand. The model can be used to analyze market equilibria in multimodal networks, and to evaluate transport policies in this context. |
