Noise, aircraft noise included, is not just decibel, it is also unwanted exposure. Thus, noise is always both physical and social environment. Findings about how to reduce negative impacts of residential exposure to aircraft sounds are physical (decibel) and psychological and physiological. However, noise reduction policies only focus on the physical (percentage annoyance) instead of on environment or social factor based policies. In his column, dr. Pieter Jan Stallen explains why this shift has not been made yet.
