| Description | Onghena, E. (2008) The integrator market: actors and their strategies, Department of Transport and Regional Economics - University of Antwerp Integrators – companies that offer vertically integrated, time-definite, door-to-door transport – have a significant market power. However, insight into the market structure and the cost structure of these companies, as well as into the consequences of their expansion and cooperation strategies, is lacking. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the integrator market from an organisational perspective, describing the strategic behaviour of the market participants. This paper provides a clear insight into the major actors of the integrator market and their expansion and cooperation strategies. More specifically, the business positioning of integrators within the air cargo industry is examined and the differences between integrated and non-integrated service providers are highlighted. In addition, the Big Four integrators are considered in detail, including their corporate origins, organisational structure, product portfolio and their operational and financial performance. Special attention is paid to their growth and relational strategies. Finally, the strategic decisions of the main new competitors in the market are investigated. |
