Regional airports may attract an increasing proportion of the growth in air traffic in the Netherlands. One reason for this is the growth of the budget airlines. The Dutch regional airports are located strategically: they serve catchment areas with a large number of potential customers. The potential for growth at the Dutch regional airports is currently limited mainly by the problem of noise nuisance. Nevertheless, with good spatial planning growth is possible within the present noise contours, for example by altering the approach and departure routes or stimulating the use of quieter aircraft through a system of differential noise charges. Eventually, provincial government authorities will have to balance the benefits of their regional airports for the regional economy and the travel opportunities for the public against the local environmental impacts. |
