Long-haul low-cost
To what extent is there a possibility for low-cost carriers on the
long-haul market? Since liberalisation of the air transport industry,
first in the US and later in Europe, the industry underwent a major
competitive shake-up. A wide array of new airline start-ups emerged
competing on price with established carriers. These low-cost airlines
offer generally low fares in exchange for eliminating many traditional
passenger services (no frills) and simplification and streamlining of
operational processes. The low-cost airline business model has, until
now, been primarily focused on the short-haul routes and point-to-point
operations. Recently some (new) low-cost airlines have started
long-haul operations.
